The History of Fish and Chips

The tradition of fish and chips dates back to the 19th century, when fried fish met delicious potatoes to form a simple yet satisfying meal for working communities. Over time, it became Britain’s most celebrated comfort food, enjoyed at the seaside, shared with family, and remembered fondly across generations.

For nearly a century, Harry Ramsden’s has been at the heart of that story. We’ve preserved the craft of authentic British fish and chips, honouring time-tested techniques, from our crisp batter and hand-cut chips to the signature flavour that made Harry Ramsden’s world-famous.

A Humble Beginning

It all began in 1928, when Harry Ramsden opened a humble wooden hut in Guiseley, West Yorkshire. With nothing more than a passion for great fish and chips, Harry quickly built a reputation for golden batter, fluffy hand-cut chips, and a warm welcome that made everyone feel at home.

The Big Fry

In 1952, to celebrate the restaurant’s 21st birthday, Harry hosted "The Big Fry". More than 10,000 portions of fish and chips were served in a single day, a world record at the time, and crowds gathered for music, entertainment, and the unmistakable taste of Harry’s. It was a moment that sealed our place in British cultural history.

A National Tradition

Over the years, Harry Ramsden’s became more than a restaurant. It became part of the nation’s story. Families travelled from across the country, children were entertained by much-loved favourites like Sooty and Sweep, and generations grew up with Harry’s as a cherished tradition.

True to Harry’s Promise

Nearly a century later, we remain true to Harry’s original promise: serving world-famous fish and chips, crafted with care, quality ingredients, and a sense of occasion. From seaside days out to family gatherings, Harry Ramsden’s is still the taste of nostalgia, connection, and timeless British tradition.
